“What, what, what?”
“When I say what, I mean what, not what!”
P.G. Wodehouse has been my go to for years. I started reading his books in school and now off course have read, re-read and re-re-read all his books.
He creates a surreal, comical world and his plots are deliciously funny. There hasn’t been a single book in which I haven’t laughed out loud.
Most of his stories are on the British aristocracy and one of his settings which I adore is “The Blandings Castle”. The castle sees it all- love triangles, engagements, attempts to thwart young unbecoming suitors, clandestine affairs carried on in the rose bushes under the moonlight, misunderstandings, imposters, robberies, blackmail, rich american business types, poets, curates, writers, musicians etc etc -you get the drift, I’m sure !
One of my all time favorite character who resides at the castle is Lord Emsworth. He off course has more money than he needs and is always being “touched” to lend some by young people wanting to make a start in life ! His full time hobby(?),purpose in life is his Pig- yes- that’s right. His medal winning prized pig- Empress of Blandings . He speaks , breathes, lives pig !
The Imperial Blandings is a collection of 3 stories – Full Moon, Pigs have wings and Service with a smile.
Then off course there are the classic characters – Jeeves and Wooster
The stories are all around the invariable “bunglings” of Bertie Wooster and then the brainy, save the day schemes of his sauve, crafty, fish eating butler- Jeeves.
P.G. Wodehouse has always made me want to jump into his world and stay there ! Isn’t that clever !
